The 2023 GMC Sierra 1500 is set for production as launching date is getting closer. For those who are into the light duty pickup truck, the Sierra 1500 can be a great option. Of course, changes also happen to all lineups of the truck, which means the HD will also get some refreshed work. But we are going to focus on the light duty truck for now, especially for the upcoming changes that will happen soon.
The Upcoming Production Plan
The new Sierra 1500 has been set to be a carryover model from the previous 2022 model. But there would be a total refreshing work happening on both the inside as well as the outside of the ride. Not to mention that there would be new trims being added to the lineup, although this one hasn’t been cleared out just yet.
The current gen from Sierra is considered a new model. After all, it was introduced in 2019 model. However, with harsh competitions, especially with the redesigned F-150 EV lightning truck and Ford F-150 projects, GMC has to improve their game. That’s why they have unveiled the new AT4X and also Denali Ultimate trims.
Chevy has done it with their Silverado ZR2 for their offroad variants. GMC wants to follow suit with the new AT4X model, designed to boost comfort as well as offroad abilities.
The Overall Sierra Production
For the 2023 model, the Sierra would experience changes on the outside as well as inside. The updates would include new rear and front end appearance, new look for the cabin, and possibly powertrain updates – although the latter one hasn’t been officially confirmed.
The Production Timeline
GMC has prepared their production schedule for Sierra. If everything goes as planned, the SORP (Start of Regular Production) for the 2023 GMC Sierra 1500 would start in the 29th of August 2022. The production itself would be implemented for the Crew Cab and Regular Cab models. Does it mean that Sierra won’t be coming with Double Cab models? No, in fact, they would be producing it, but in later dates. The production should start a week later, set on the 6th of September.
In the previous report, the GMC Sierra HD 2023 would start producing on the 18th of July 2022 at their GM Flint manufacturing plant in Michigan. In the meanwhile, the light duty 1500 Sierra would be made at the Fort Wayne manufacturing plant in Indiana, together with the GM Silao manufacturing plant located in Mexico.
The Powertrain for Sierra 1500 2023
Changes would also take place in the engine department. New Duramax turbodiesel unit with 3.0 liter capacity would be introduced to the lineup. This novel LZ0 unit is designed to take over the LM2 I6 unit (also with 3.0 liter capacity), expected to deliver the same output and performance. But with the new unit, it is expected to improve the fuel economy as well as the emission.
The LZ0 won’t be the only engine option made available for Sierra 1500. There would be a total of 4 engines, with the turbodiesel LZ0 as one of them. Expect to find the gas L3B I4 turbocharged unit with 2.7 liter capacity, the naturally aspirated gas V8 unit with 5.53 liter capacity, and the naturally aspirated gas V8 unit with 6.2 liter capacity. In the meanwhile, the full size pickup truck would be coming with the T1 platform from GM.
Be prepared to find some common (and normal) features to be missing from the 2023 GMC Sierra 1500, such as Front (and Rear) Park Assist and Rear Park Assist. It happens because of the shortage of semiconductor chip happening globally. When would those features be available to the Sierra 1500? We can’t really know for sure.
Price and Launch Date
The information about the launch date is still unknown and so is the price matter. A lot of sources say that the launch would take place in summer time, but it doesn’t seem likely, considering that the production time also starts at the same time. Details about the ride aren’t complete just yet, so it’s logical that the latest updates about the Sierra haven’t been completely revealed. We can only wait for the latest updates, including about the 2023 GMC Sierra 1500.
